What is a mangosteen fruit?
If this is your first time hearing about mangosteen, very simply, Garcinia mangostana (its Latin name) is a tropical tree that grows mainly in Southeast Asia. It produces unique looking fruits that we use in our Vie100 Mangosteen Juice.
What does mangosteen taste like?
The fruit of the purple mangosteen is composed of two main parts, a deep reddish and purple outer rind, called the pericarp, and a softer inner fruit called the pulp. This inner part of the fruit is the most consumed section as it has a delicate, sweet and tangy flavour with a juicy and somewhat fibrous texture that resembles many citrus fruits. The rind, in contrast, is very bitter but when ripe is packed with antioxidants called xanthones that have amazing health value.
How to eat mangosteen fruits?
Raw mangosteen fruit can be eaten by cutting horizontally around the fruit gently to separate the outer layer. When picked fresh the mangosteen is soft but over time the skin will harden as it dries. If you take care to avoid cutting into the soft canter, the top can be twisted off along the cut. Now you can scoop out the goodness inside – traditionally we use a skewer to pick out the segments. Inside some of the segments are seeds that are a little bitter eat them as you like.
